Lufthansa – Hand baggage

Regulations for carry-on luggage by travel class
You may bring one piece of carry-on luggage with you, or two pieces in Business or First Class, such as a trolley case, a small, foldable baby stroller, or a foldable garment bag. For HON Circle Members, Senators, frequent fliers, and travelers with Star Alliance Gold or Silver status, the amount of carry-on luggage allowed is regulated by the appropriate travel class.

  • Carry-on bag specifications: maximum 55 x 40 x 23 cm
  • Maximum 57 x 54 x 15 cm for foldable clothes bags

You can use Lufthansa’s baggage calculator to quickly determine your free baggage allowance. The calculator is based on route, travel class, and fare. The calculations will also provide you with the maximum sizes and weights for carry-on luggage.

Baggage calculator

The number of free bags you receive and the price of additional bags are determined by the route and the booked travel class or rate. Lufthansa has developed a baggage calculator to determine how much luggage you can bring on board and how to arrange for additional baggage.

You can access the baggage calculator here.

Increased comfort with less luggage

Your carry-on luggage must adhere to the rules for a quick and easy boarding process, greater room for storage on board, and a timely departure. For this reason, at the airports of departure, Lufthansa verify your carry-on luggage against the permissible sizes, numbers, and weights.

Please be aware that Lufthansa verifies compliance with the carry-on baggage regulations before taking off. Oversized or heavy carryon luggage will be charged to be loaded into the cargo hold at the gate. Only credit cards are accepted for payment of these costs, which are much more at the gate than in the check-in area.

You might also need to check carry-on luggage that complies with the rules at the gate before to boarding if the flight is extremely busy.

Please be careful to bring personal goods, including valuables and medications, into the cabin in both of the aforementioned situations. Devices that include batteries or rechargeable batteries, such as cell phones, tablets, power banks, or electronic cigarettes, are likewise prohibited from being transported in checked baggage.
